Migrating from Tally
If your business has been running on Tally and you are ready to move to Udyot ERP, the transition is designed to be smooth. Udyot ERP’s built-in Tally import tool brings your Chart of Accounts, stock items, party masters, and opening balances directly into the system — so you can continue working in Bikram Sambat dates and NPR on day one, without re-entering master data by hand.
What carries over from Tally to Udyot ERP
| What gets imported | Details |
|---|---|
| Ledgers and Chart of Accounts | All ledgers with account groups and opening balances. Tally group names (e.g. Sundry Debtor, Indirect Expn Taxable) are automatically mapped to Udyot’s NFRS-aligned groups. |
| Stock items | Product masters with unit of measure, stock group, opening quantity, and opening rate (cost per unit). |
| Party masters | Customers (Sundry Debtors) and suppliers (Sundry Creditors) with PAN numbers and opening balances. |
| Opening balances | Cash, bank, receivables, payables, loans, and fixed assets as of your chosen cut-over date. |
| Historical vouchers (optional) | Day Book transactions — Sales, Purchase, Journal, Payment, Receipt, and more — imported in the background so large files do not slow you down. |
Before you start: export your data from Tally
Udyot ERP accepts Tally’s standard XML export format. Do these steps in Tally or TallyPrime first:
- Go to Display → List of Accounts, click Export, and choose XML. Make sure the export includes Ledger masters, Stock Item masters (with opening balance and opening rate), and Godown masters.
- If you also want historical transactions, go to Display → Day Book, set your date range, and export to XML. Export month by month for large files.
- Note your cut-over date — the last date in Tally for which all entries are complete. This becomes your opening balance date in Udyot ERP.
File encoding: Tally on Windows exports UTF-16 by default. The importer detects and converts this automatically — no manual conversion needed.
Importing masters and opening balances
- Log in to Udyot ERP and select your company. If you have not created it yet, see Setting Up Your Company first.
- Go to Settings → Account Settings → Import from Tally.
- Click Choose file and upload your Tally XML export.
- The importer runs immediately and shows a summary: ledgers, stock items, parties, and godowns created or updated.
- If any Tally group names could not be matched automatically, a Review & Map panel appears. Map each unrecognised group to one of Udyot’s standard NFRS groups, or create a new sub-group. Your choices are saved and applied automatically on future imports.
- Click Apply Import. Masters are now live in your company.
If your XML included Day Book vouchers, a Vouchers detected card appears next. Click Import vouchers to start a background queue job. You can leave the page and return — already-posted vouchers are skipped on any re-run, so there are no duplicates. If any vouchers fail, download the failed vouchers CSV to see the exact error, fix the data in Tally, re-export, and re-upload.
The key difference from Tally: opening stock and Capital A/c
In Tally it is common to include the full opening stock value inside your Capital A/c opening balance. Do not do this in Udyot ERP. When you import stock items with opening quantities and rates, Udyot automatically posts a journal crediting Capital A/c with the inventory value. Adding the stock amount to Capital A/c manually as well will double-count equity and throw off your Trial Balance.
Rule: set Capital A/c opening balance to cash, bank, receivables, and fixed assets — minus liabilities. The system handles the stock side. The live imbalance indicator on the ledger form shows green when your openings are correct.
Nepal-specific notes
- Bikram Sambat dates: all vouchers and reports work natively in BS format. The importer converts AD dates from the Tally export to BS automatically.
- VAT at 13%: Udyot seeds VAT Output (13%) and VAT Input (13%) ledgers on company creation. Tally ledgers for VAT are mapped to the correct NFRS group during import.
- TDS sections: nine TDS sections under the Income Tax Act 2058 are pre-configured. After import, tag each vendor party with the relevant section (for example, 15-2 for services at 1.5%) so that Payment vouchers auto-compute TDS deductions.
- Tally group aliases: over 50 common Tally group names — including Sundry Creditor, Bank OD A/c, Prepaid Expenses, and Nepal Income Tax Act depreciation pools (Pool “A” through Pool “E”) — are mapped to their NFRS equivalents automatically.
Verifying your opening Trial Balance after import
- Go to Reports → Trial Balance and set the date to the first day of your fiscal year in BS (for example, 2081-04-01 for FY 2081/82).
- The footer must show Total Debits = Total Credits. If it does not, an amber banner shows the exact shortfall.
- The most common cause of imbalance after a Tally migration: Capital A/c opening was set to include stock value. Edit the ledger and reduce Capital A/c by your total opening stock value.
- Once the Trial Balance balances, check Reports → Balance Sheet — Stock-in-Hand should appear under Current Assets and Total Assets should equal Total Liabilities plus Equity.
Once the Trial Balance is balanced you are ready to post new transactions in Udyot ERP. You may choose to compare reports in both systems for the first month as a confidence check, but it is not required.
